IEOM Society addresses the issues of Global Engineering Education. There are different levels of readiness of engineering graduates from various parts of the world. One of the main themes of this series is how to reduce the readiness gap around the world. The special focus is given to Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering including Engineering Management. Are the engineering graduates ready to take on the challenges of the current global economy? With the great success of Global Engineering Education Series of past IEOM conferences, IEOM 2021 Rome Conference will have a dedicated session for the Global Engineering Education where distinguished speakers will discuss the readiness of engineering graduates for workforce around the world. Featured speakers will be from various part of the world to address engineering education challenges and opportunities.

Dr. Matthew Ohland is the Dale and Suzi Gallagher Professor of Engineering Education at Purdue University. He is a fellow of the American Society of Engineering Education, IEEE, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Along with his research partners, he was recognized for his work on longitudinal studies of engineering students with best paper awards in the Journal of Engineering Education in 2008, 2011, and 2019 and in the IEEE Transactions on Education in 2011 and 2015 in addition to best paper awards at multiple conferences. The CATME Team Tools software for team formation and peer evaluation developed under Dr. Ohland’s leadership has also received various awards and has been used by over 1,650,000 students worldwide. He received the Charles B. Murphy Award, Purdue University’s highest teaching recognition, in 2015. Dr. Ohland previously served as Associate Professor of General Engineering at Clemson University, Assistant Director of the NSF-sponsored SUCCEED Engineering Education Coalition and an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow for Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology Education. Dr. Ohland has a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida. Previously, he earned an M.S. in Materials Engineering and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1991 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a B.S. in Engineering and a B.A. in Religion from Swarthmore College.

Understanding the Philosophy of Outcome based Education System
Dr. Ali Nasir is a Fulbright alumnus, an HEC approved Ph.D. supervisor (2013-Present) and a member of National Curriculum Review Committee for Electrical Engineering (2017). He has a blend of industrial and academic experience serving as project manager, director of control systems laboratory, head of department, industrial consultant, and lead researcher. Dr. Ali obtained his PhD (2012) along with two M.Sc. degrees (in Electrical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering) from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor in USA (2008 and 2011 respectively). He received his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering with honors from the University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila (2005). He is currently working on distributed control of multi-agent systems and human intent prediction. His research interests also include Approximate Dynamic programming, fault tolerant control, and stochastic optimal control. He has more than 30 national and international publications to his credit including international conference publications, national and international journal publications, and book chapters.

Patrick Dallasega is an Assistant Professor of Factory Planning and Project Management at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Free University of Bolzano (Italy). He studied at the Free University of Bolzano (Italy), at the Polytechnic University of Turin (Italy) and got his PhD at the University of Stuttgart (Germany). From 2005 until 2010, he worked in the fields of plant and factory planning in a local food processing industry. Later, from 2012 until 2015, he was employed as Research Associate at Fraunhofer Italia Research where he managed and executed several research projects for private and public customers. Since 2016, he has been employed as Assistant Professor at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. His main research interests are in, supply chain management, Industry 4.0, lean construction, lean manufacturing and production planning and control in MTO and ETO enterprises.

“How to ensure best outcome for students in project based learning?”’
Dr. Azharul Karim is currently working as an Associate Professor in School of Mechanical, Medical and Process Engineering
Faculty of Engineering and course leader of Master of Engineering Management at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. Through his scholarly and innovative research, he has established a national and international standing. His excellence in research has been demonstrated by development of many innovative new products, 162 high quality refereed publications (including 74 Journal papers, 2 books and 12 book chapters), 16 research grants amounting A$3.2 million, being invited by reputed world universities for invited seminars and his editorial role in top ranked Journals. Dr Karim is the inventor of energy and water efficient ultrasonic washing machine (patent WO02089652) and Ultrasonic dishwasher (patent WO0229148). He is the assistant editor of ‘Drying Technology’ and ‘Journal of Industrial Engineering’ journals. Dr Karim is currently leading ‘Energy & Drying’ research group at QUT. In last five years, he conferred 9 PhD degrees. His current research areas are Solar thermal energy, Lean Manufacturing, Microstructure investigation of food drying, and project based learning in engineering.
Dr Karim has pioneered innovative project based learning (PBL) for postgraduate engineering management students. This new project based learning is designed as the platform where students practice and pursue evidence-based practice using authentic industry problems, cases and projects and utilise their skills with contemporary software/analytic tools and engineering management skills. This allows students to constructively develop, synthesize and apply their learning in engineering management being realised in their authentic industry based projects. Through this PBL, students are able to develop higher level skills and understanding which are increasingly in high demand in industry and highly recommended by professional bodies such as Engineers Australia. Due to careful planning, designing and delivery of real- world and authentic unit content and learning environments, final student outcomes were highly satisfactory. Students found that the outcomes of their learning were highly supportive of their career development and progression.

Professor Pahari, a Civil Engineer, obtained master’s degree in energy efficient building technology from Germany and had doctorate degree in quality of engineering education from Nepal. He had also post doctorate degree in quality management from France.
He has extensive involvement in the professional and academic area. He is the initiator of cooperation & coordination between academia, industry and profession in Nepal. He is also involved in the professional works on quality management. He is also widely involved in the quality of engineering education & professional practice. He is also working on leadership and management in the enterprises. Professor Pahari is also involved in the project planning, implementation, directing and monitoring.
Professor Pahari has been working in different capacity in the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University (TU) and he is currently the Professor of Civil Engineering. He has served the University in the capacity of Dean of Institute of engineering during 2010 to 2014. He was the director of centre for energy studies from 2015 to 2018.
Besides academic works, Professor Pahari has been extensively involved in the professional area as well. He was the director of IOE engineering consultancy services of the university from 2007 to 2010. He has been the chairman of Amarawati builders & Developers Pvt. Ltd. since 2007 till now. At present, he owns the four-star upscaled hotel Sarowar in Pokhara Nepal and involves as chairperson of the organization.
Professor Pahari is the author of six books and numbers of articles in national and international journals. Professor Pahari has chaired and co-chaired numbers of national and international conferences, meetings, workshops, etc.
Further to this, Prof. Pahari has supervised several masters and PhD theses. He has also led several research projects of the government in energy planning and quality of management.

Dr. Ogundu has extensive experience in academia, leadership, project management, business process excellence, lean transformation, six-sigma, supply chain management and supplier quality, change management, operations, industrial engineering, manufacturing and process engineering, quality engineering and quality assurance. Dr. Ogundu is a lean practitioner and six-sigma practitioner that sees lean six-sigma as operations management philosophy that is based on the relationship between waste reduction and elimination, quality improvement and operations performance measures.

Mohamed Essaaidi, Prof. Dr., IEEE Senior Member and a Professor at ENSIAS, Mohammed V University in Rabat.
He obtained the State Doctorate (1997) in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Abdelmalek Essaadi University, Tetuan, Morocco. He was the Director of International Cooperation at the Ministry of General Affairs and Governance, Morocco (2019), Dean of ENSIAS College of IT Engineering of Mohammed V University of Rabat, Morocco (November 2011-May 2019), Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Abdelmalek Essaadi University in Tetuan, Morocco (2001-2011) and Assistant Professor at the same university (1993-2001).
Prof. Essaaidi is IEEE Global Cities Alliance, MEA Chairman (2021), IEEE Humanitarian Activities Assessment Committee Member (2021), IEEE Teaching Excellence Editorial Hub, Member (2021).
He is also a lecturer on Smart Cities at the ITU IoT Academy (2020-2021) and the Chief of Party of Interactive Digital Center Morocco (2020-2021).
He is the founder and past Chairman of the IEEE Morocco Section (2005-2015), co-founder and chair of IEEE Morocco Communications / Computer Society Chapter (2006-2008) and IEEE Education Society Morocco Chapter chair from 2007 to 2009.
He has been a member of Committee of Global Accreditation activities of IEEE Education Activities Board (2017-2018). He has been also Director of the Morocco Office of Arab Science and Technology Foundation, ASTF (2006-2009) and the Coordinator of ASTF RD&I Network of Electro-Technology (2006 – 2008).
He has authored and co-authored 10 books and more than 200 papers in international refereed journals and conferences in the field of Electrical and Computer engineering and its diverse applications including smart homes, smart mobility smart grid and smart cities. He has been the Editor-in-Chief of International Journal on Information and Communication Technologies, Serial Publications, India (2007-2011) and Guest Editor of several international journals. He is also an active member of the editorial boards of several international journals in the same fields mentioned above.
Furthermore, Prof. Essaaidi is the founder and the General Chair / co-chair of several IEEE technically sponsored international conferences, including Mediterranean Microwave Symposium (which is organized on yearly basis since 2000), Information and Communication Technologies International Symposium (2005, 2007). He also organized and co-chaired IEEE Smart Cities Summit in May 2020, the US National Academies 5th Arab American Science, Engineering and Medicine Frontiers Symposium in November 2017, Rabat, Morocco and US NSF sponsored workshop on Smart Cities in January 2016 in Rabat, Morocco. He has also served in the Organizing committees and TPC and presented keynote talks at many other international conferences worldwide including on smart cities. He has been also Committee Member of IEEE Casablanca Core Smart City in 2016 and a member of Madinat Al-Irfane University Smart Campus initiative, Rabat.
Prof. Essaaidi holds 10 patents in the field ICT. Some of these patents received several international innovation awards. He was also a member of the IEEE 802.16 Sponsor Ballot Pool of IEEE Standard Association that defined the technical specifications for WiMAX, and of that of IEEE P2784 – Smart City Planning and Technology Guide Work Group (2020).
Prof. Essaaidi supervised several Masters and PhDs theses and he has been the principal investigator and the project manager for several research projects in the framework of national and international programs.
Furthermore, in the framework of his position as the director of International Cooperation in the Ministry of General Affairs and Governance, he was extensively involved in the coordination of the World Bank Morocco Country Partnership Framework (2019-2024) and OECD Morocco Country Program (2019-2021) among other international cooperation programs.

Dr. Noha Mostafa is an assistant professor of industrial engineering and management in Mechanical engineering department, The British University in Egypt. She was a visiting PhD student in Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan in 2016 and she finished her PhD degree in 2017 from Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST), Alexandria, Egypt. She has broad research interests including supply chain management, logistics, Internet of Things, sustainability, quality management, design thinking, Lean manufacturing, information systems, and entrepreneurship. In addition, she is supervising M.Sc. students and graduation projects and has participated in several international and local conferences and competitions. She is the founder and faculty advisor of IEOM student chapter in Zagazig University.
